In the small hall behind the big stone door at the top of the Wren steps on the north of Soulton Hall, the house of Old Sir Rowland, there is some Latin.
Sometimes people ask what it means, and we are happy to tell them that this is what it says:
UT ROSA FLOS FLORUM, SIC EST ISTA DOMUS DOMORUM
[As the rose if the flower of flowers, so this is the house of houses]
Inscriptions of a similar nature are present in both the Chapter House of York Minster and Westminster Abbey.
