There is an insctription in Greek above the door that takes you from the Hall Hall into the Staircase Hall.
Sometimes people ask about what it means and we are happy to tell them it says:
ἐὰν ᾖς φιλομαθής, ἔσει πολυμαθής,
[If you loving learning you will become wise]
It is from Isocrates echoing a 1600s carving on what is now Shrewsbury Library, previously the home of Shrewsbury School, in which ‘Old’ Sir Rowland had a hand in founding.
