While our recent visit was regrettably brief, it instantly transported us to an era of daring trade and community.
This remarkable guildhall, one of the largest and best-preserved in Europe, remarkably continues its original purpose after over 660 years.
The Hall is particularly interesting to us at Soulton due to its clear expression of the Merchant Halls of Old Sir Rowland Hill’s time. As one of the most important Tudor merchants, a prominent Mercer, and a leading Merchant Adventurer, Sir Rowland Hill (d. 1561) though based in London and Europe, would have known many spaces of this kind and their culture. His extensive network and influence would have undoubtedly touched the lives and fortunes of merchants across England, including those operating from this very hall in York.
Sadly, time only allowed for a short visit, but we are genuinely excited to return to this fellow Historic Houses member when we can. Our brief encounter with this incredible place only deepened our appreciation for the intricate web of history that binds these significant sites and the pioneering individuals who shaped them, like Sir Rowland Hill.
