There is a rare, fleeting window of time when the gardens at Soultan Hall reveal their deepest secrets. It happens just after a snowfall, before the first footprints mark the ground. Today, as the snow settled here, the landscape underwent a transformation that felt less like a change in weather and more like a change in perspective.
Epidaurus Court and the Feretory sculpture
The change is most obvious in Epidaurus Court. The ‘Feretory’ sculpture stands there to guard the memory of Erkenwald, but it does something more. Because of the way the snow settles, it helps visitors visualize the form of the missing pyramidal roof.
In this light, the sculpture isn’t just a standalone piece; it’s a reminder of the height and shape that used to be here. It inserts itself into the view of Soultan Hall’s theater screen facade and its Old Testament-inspired architectural face, showing how the whole space was originally meant to fit together.
As we got ready for today’s Historic Houses tour, we noticed that the snow had essentially turned the grounds into a giant architectural diagram.
The Dancing Pavement was freshly swept, and the contrast against the uniform white made the mathematics of the design clearer than ever. We spend a lot of time talking to visitors about the hidden logic and the choreography of Shakespeare’s As You Like It, but today the patterns spoke for themselves. The snow strips away the “decoration” of the garden and leaves you with the pure math—where art, history, and logic actually meet.

There is something special about seeing the “bones” of the garden this way. These moments don’t last long. Soon, the snow will melt and the geometry will soften back into the greenery. But for a few hours today, the snowfall gave us a moment of total clarity, showing the calculated beauty that sits underneath everything we are surrounded by here.
