A Domesday Book Celebration

Among her many accomplishments, a highlight of Pauline’s mayoral term in 1986 was the town’s starring role in the national celebrations for the 900th anniversary of the Domesday Book. The BBC chose to focus on Wem because of its unique historical connections. The town was exceptional in having direct, unbroken male-line descendants of both its pre- and post-Conquest Manorial Lords.

This historical moment was made even more significant by the presence of historian Michael Wood, who presented the televised event. The two heirs brought together for the occasion were Pierre de Panthou (a descendant of the Norman lord who took over the land after the Conquest) and Dr. George Arden.

The Arden family, from whom William Shakespeare and his mother Mary Arden were descended, were landholders in Wem prior to the Norman Conquest. Their ancient lineage connected the town to one of England’s most famous literary figures. This remarkable link to the past—one that few places in the country could claim—was a fitting way to mark the beginning of Pauline’s legacy as Mayor.

Honoring a Legacy
