The distant hills over a plain might just evoke J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional Middle-earth.
Intriguingly, Shropshire’s most recognizable landmark, The Wrekin, dominates the landscape just south of here. This lonely hill has been a popular theory amongst some Tolkien fans as a source of inspiration for the landscapes of Middle-earth.
The village of Ellesmere, to our west, has been proposed by some as the inspiration for Laketown featured in Tolkien’s “The Hobbit.”
These are theories… but a lot of people hold to them.
