The Rendering of the Quit Rents to the Crown by the City of London Corporation and presentation of the Sheriff’s Warrants presented by the King’s Remembrancer.
For over 800 years, the City of London has observed the tradition of “Rendering Quit Rents to the Crown.” These ceremonies take place before the King’s Remembrancer, the oldest continuously existing judicial office in England. The tradition dates back to the reign of King John, predating even Magna Carta.
This year, in honor of Sir Rowland Hill, a Tudor sheriff and Lord Mayor of the City with strong Shropshire connections, we are participat in this ancient event

The 2024 event will place in Court 4, the court room of The Lady Chief Justice, at the Royal Courts of Justice, and will be followed by events at Middle Temple.
At the ceremony, the new Sheriffs of The City of London are also presented with their Royal Warrants.

The Soulton contribution will be a lecture within the ceremony about Sir Rowland Hill.
The lecture will look at the shrieval year of ‘Old’ Sir Rowland Hill (1541-42) and his life and ideas as the developed after that time.
In 1541-2, Hill was caught up in events that would:
- see him sent to the Tower of London as a prisoner,
- be knighted by Henry VIII, and
- echo into the English Civil War 100 years on in 1642

Later Sir Rowland Hill would publish the Geneva Bible, inspire Shakespeare’s play As You Like It, and be one of the foremost figures in igniting the English Renaissance.
