On Saturday, 14th November, Soulton Hall will host a Latin Mass in the Dominican Rite, celebrated by Prior Matthew Jarvis OP to mark the feast of Saint Erkenwald.

Formal permission for this liturgy, as well as the afternoon services following it, has been sought and granted by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Shrewsbury, Mark Davies.

Conducting the service entirely in Latin within the historic Dominican tradition, the gathering offers a quiet, reflective space for traditional worship of a type seen hundreds of years ago. Because capacity in the prayer room is strictly limited, attendance is primarily managed through personal invitations extended to key representatives. Anyone wishing to secure a place should contact us to ask for a ticket, and please note availability is very limited as the Prayer Room is small.

Heritage and Setting

Saint Erkenwald, the seventh-century Saxon Bishop of London and traditional founder of old Saint Paul’s Cathedral, remains a powerful figure in English history. Recognized as a law-giver and a builder of the nation, he serves as a symbol bridging deep history, divine mercy, and spiritual inquiry. Observing his feast day places this gathering within a centuries-old tradition of Christian reflection across boundaries.

The prayer room itself is located just off the dance court, though visitors should note that access involves three steps.

Rooted in the complex history and legacy associated with figures like Sir Rowland Hill, this event responds to a house with a heritage shaped by religious transition and diverse intellectual currents. It represents a thoughtful, measured step forward—anchored in an ongoing, careful journey of ecumenical discernment.
