Hundreds flock to Shakespeare-inspired wood, raising thousands for charity

We are thrilled to acknowledge the recent coverage in the Shropshire Star regarding our annual charity event in thier article “Shropshire bluebell wood that inspired Shakespeare hosts fundraiser”.

It was a joy to welcome over 250 visitors to the estate last Sunday, all of whom enjoyed the peak of the bluebell season in the glorious spring sunshine.

The event was a resounding success, raising a total of £3,368.

Every penny will go directly to Macmillan Cancer Support to assist those affected by cancer within Shropshire.

A Walk Through History

The Soulton Hall bluebell wood holds a unique place in English heritage. It is widely believed to be the setting for William Shakespeare’s comedy As You Like It.

Opening these woods to the public is a rare event; this was only the third time the wood has been accessible since the play was authored over 500 years ago.

The connectionruns deep:

  • Sir Rowland Hill: Our fourbare, the first Protestant Lord Mayor of London, purchased the manor in 1556.

  • Literary Links: Sir Rowland is  the inspiration for the character Sir Roland de Bois in Shakespeare’s play.

Highlights of the Day

In addition to the “blue carpet” of flowers beneath our ancient oaks, visitors enjoyed:

  • The Woodland Trail: A new addition this year to help children engage with the natural world.

  • Refreshments: Afternoon teas and a popular plant stall featuring hardy perennials.

  • Community Spirit: Guests travelled from Shrewsbury, Oswestry, Telford, and beyond to support the cause.
