At the instigation of professors from Cambridge University, we recently completed a highly informative visit to the Factum Foundation for Digital Technology in Preservation at their Jermyn Street premises in London. Factum Foundation is a world leader in cultural heritage preservation. The foundation’s mission strongly aligns with the principles of custodianship here at Soulton Hall.
The meeting included detailed discussions with Ferdinand Saumarez Smith, covering the technical precision required for high-fidelity recording and the philosophical depths of his own published work, Eleusis and Enlightenment: The Problem of the Mysteries in Eighteenth-Century Thought.
We also explored the latest advancements in museum and reproduction technology.
This conversation was a profound reminder of the link between ancient heritage and digital innovation. Digital technology allows heritage to become a “point of origin” whose benefit can be accessed globally. This concept is vital for a site like Soulton, where we seek to preserve the ancient and complex history of St. Erkenwald and the legacy of Sir Rowland Hill to the highest possible modern standards.
