A Walk Through Literary History
This isn’t just any woodland. Soulton is the inspiration for the “Forest of Arden” in William Shakespeare’s beloved comedy, As You Like It.
When you walk these paths, you are walking through a landscape that has remained largely unchanged since the 16th century—the same views that inspired the Bard and his contemporaries.
As you wander, listen for the rare song of the skylarks in the surrounding fields; it is a soundtrack to a truly historic experience.
William Shakespeare famously drew the plot for his play from Thomas Lodge’s Rosalynde. Lodge, in turn, drew inspiration from the history and landscape of Soulton Hall—the place of his upbringing. When you walk through our bluebell woods, you are exploring the real-world “Forest of Arden” that transitioned from Lodge’s boyhood memories into Shakespeare’s immortal prose.
