A wonderful gift that brings history to life! This cube-octahedron model vividly demonstrates the geometric principles Old Sir Rowland held dear, connecting Soulton Hall’s past to the present.
This model is a truly perfect visual aid. It will greatly help us explain and appreciate the fascinating geometrical principles that so intrigued Old Sir Rowland Hill. Specifically, it can be used to highlights how cubes, cube-octahedrons, and octahedrons are all capable of being used to ‘cut out’ from inside a rhombic dodecahedron of the same size and geometry.
A perfect visual aid! This donated marble cube-octahedron shows how these shapes relate to the rhombic dodecahedron – a key part of the ‘garnet code’ in Renaissance architecture and beyond.
This concept is a key part of the scholarship that was important to Hill, and it’s also visible in Saxon art and Renaissance architecture as part of what we call “the garnet code” here at Soulton Hall, which we have supported James D. Wenn’s study and public explanation of.
We absolutely love how this gift connects Hill’s historical interests directly to something tangible we can share with all our visitors today.
