We recently had the opportunity for a special visit to the Marlborough Mound, a unique historical landmark located within the grounds of Marlborough College.
As guests of members of the Marlborough College community, we were afforded a distinct perspective on this site. This large prehistoric mound holds a significant place in the area’s history.
Marlborough Mound
Many might not realize that the Marlborough Mound is the second-largest prehistoric mound in Britain, following only Silbury Hill.
Its origins are ancient, likely dating back to the Neolithic period, similar to other notable sites in Wiltshire. Its construction would have involved considerable effort by early communities, reflecting their collective work and connection to the landscape. For a long time, its exact purpose has been a subject of discussion, with theories ranging from a burial site to an observation point related to celestial events. The mound later became part of a Norman motte-and-bailey castle, adding another layer to its long history.
