As the UK joins to mark Remembrance Day, let us pause to honour the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.
In our minds here in particular is Second Lieutenant Edward Ashton, whose death at the opening of the Battle of the Somme serves as a poignant reminder of the immense cost of war.
Edward’s sacrifice, like countless others, underscores the profound impact of conflict. It is a stark reminder that behind every casualty lies a unique individual, a loved one, a story. He was a scholar and a lover of books and the classics. His loss, and the loss of so many others, should not be forgotten.
While we honour the past, we must also acknowledge the present.
