LIDAR, which stands for Light Detection and Ranging, is a powerful tool that uses lasers to see beyond the surface. Imagine shining a light and measuring how long it takes to bounce back that’s essentially what LIDAR does, but with rapid laser pulses and incredibly precise measurements.
This technique creates detailed 3D models of landscapes, revealing hidden features like ancient ruins, forgotten roads, or even subtle changes in elevation. Think of it as X-ray vision for archaeologists and explorers!
LIDAR works by firing lasers from airplanes or drones. When these lasers hit the ground or objects below, they bounce back, and the time it takes for their return is recorded. This data is then used to create a highly accurate 3D map, allowing us to see what might be hidden by vegetation, buildings, or even time itself.
