A Turbulent Chapter: Eadric Streona and Soulton
Soulton’s history intertwines with a period of great upheaval in England – the Viking invasions of the 11th century. Soulton’s story predates this era and continues after it, but the actions of Eadric Streona, brother of Soulton’s Saxon lord, Brihtric, cast a long shadow.
Eadric Streona was a prominent figure whose career was marked by shifting allegiances. He rose to power through marriage to King Ethelred’s daughter and became Ealdorman of Mercia. However, he’s best known for his treachery.
Historical records depict Eadric switching sides, first supporting King Ethelred, then joining the invading Danes, significantly weakening English resistance. Notably, during the pivotal Battle of Assandun (1016), Eadric’s actions remain unclear. He either withdrew his forces or deserted entirely, leading to a decisive Danish victory.
Despite this betrayal, Eadric somehow reconciled with the defeated English king, Edmund Ironside. However, his reprieve was brief. After Edmund’s death, the new king, Cnut, executed Eadric on Christmas Day 1017.
While we can only speculate about conversations at Soulton during this time, Eadric’s actions raise questions.
