Last Sunday, the second Sunday of Advent, the Aedicule within the historic Chapel complex at Soulton Hall was honoured to host a service of Roman Catholic Mass. This occasion is understood to be the second such service in modern times, marking a moment of profound historical significance—potentially the second in 475 years—and symbolizing a journey toward reconciliation.

Soulton’s long-ranging past includes its vital role during the tumultuous 16th-century Reformation, when it served as a sanctuary for those facing persecution.

The Ashton family recognise the legacy of compassion and tolerance held within the ethos of Sir Rowland Hill, the Hall’s builder, who was renowned for his kindness and respect for diverse beliefs, is continually honoured within the Aedicule’s atmosphere. The serene setting, with its architectural alignments and historical weight, provides an ideal space where the exploration of shared spiritual values can take place. Today, this is deeply cherished and is intended to be carried forward through acts of genuine ecumenism.

The hosting of the Mass is not an isolated event but forms part of a continuous programme of engagement across the stakeholdership of the faith-related story of Soulton Hall. Work has been undertaken over many years to foster this tradition of inclusivity, ensuring the Hall remains a site that accommodates respect for the needs of the different faith communities whose stories bifurcate from the 1550s story of Soulton Hall and its association with St Erkenwald.

Services recently held (see this page for passed events) or planned (see this page for forthcoming events) reflect this commitment, including:

  • Anglican Said Eucharist and Roman Catholic Mass in their own traditions services.
  • Ecumenical services held in the Prayer Room on significant holy days, such as St. Erkenwald’s Day.
  • The reflective Tenebrae service during Holy Week.

By maintaining this variety of acts of worship, a deeper appreciation for the diverse cultural and religious traditions that enrich the nation is sought.
