Soulton’s history extends beyond its own walls, and a short distance away stand the impressive ruins of Morton Corbet Castle, and the two estates share a curious family connection.
Over the centuries, the Corbet family and the families of Soulton Hall have intermarried on several occasions.
This intertwined lineage reveals a particularly fascinating link through Alice Gratewood the heiress of Sir Rowland Hill who married Rowland Hill’s associated Reginald Corbet in 1546. One of the children of that marriage was Elizabeth, who married Robert Arden (son of Edward Arden) both of the Arden family of Park Hall, Castle Bromwich – cousins of Shakespeare’s mother Mary Arden.
Morton Corbet Castle’s imposing ruins serve as a tangible reminder of the kinship of these families. Exploring them, one can almost feel the echoes of past generations.
