A Mathematical Mind Behind the Castle: The Philosophical Foundations of Bolsover Castle

Bolsover Castle, located in Derbyshire, England, is a significant historical landmark.

The castle’s history dates back to the 12th century when it was a simple motte-and-bailey fortress.

However, its most significant transformation occurred during the 17th century under the ownership of Sir Charles Cavendish.

Robert Smythson, a renowned architect of the Elizabethan era, played a pivotal role in the transformation of Bolsover Castle.

Under the patronage of Sir Charles Cavendish, Smythson designed a grand residence that blended elements of Elizabethan, Jacobean, and Baroque styles. The resulting architectural work is an expression of ideas that informed the design of both Soulton and Wollaton.

The construction of the castle was continued by Cavendish’s two sons, who were influenced by the Italian-inspired work of the architect Inigo Jones.

However, the Civil Wars of 1642 to 1651 interrupted the building process. The castle was captured by the Parliamentarians, who damaged it significantly.

Today, Bolsover Castle is a popular tourist attraction, offering visitors a glimpse into the past and the opportunity to explore the castle’s fascinating history and architecture, and we very much enoyoyed our recent visit.
