‘Round the back’ of Soulton Hall (on the south-facing side) there are two arches made of huge blocks of stone.
On the inside it is clear that one of them used to be a doorway, but the ground level was raised sometime — maybe when the beautiful cobbled mosaic was laid in 1847? The other is still a door in use to this day.
Like the patterns of black bricks in the walls, the arches are really clearly Tudor.

Over the years writers have been confused about the date of the Hall. This is because they only looked at the house from the roadside, and saw the detailed door case that was added to ornament the Hall after the Civil War…
…we wonder what they would have made of the house if they had got to enjoy the full tour!
