A Journey Through Time: Beowulf at the Barrow
Soulton Hall is proud to be a place where history comes alive. But on a crisp October evening in 2021, something truly extraordinary unfolded on this land. We hosted “Beowulf at the Barrow,” an immersive event that transported guests to the heart of the Anglo-Saxon world.
The evening began with a communal meal, a taste of history itself. As the sounds of reconstructed instruments filled the air, guests savored a simple yet authentic Anglo-Saxon feast. This shared experience fostered a sense of camaraderie, preparing everyone for the journey ahead.
Our Moot Hall (which is Tudor timbers, rearranged in the C17th) transformed into a magnificent Saxon mead-hall. Cloaked in the warm glow of flickering firelight, talented performers from Thegns of Mercia took center stage. Clad in meticulously crafted costumes and surrounded by treasures reminiscent of archaeological finds, they captivated the audience with songs, poems, and excerpts from the epic poem Beowulf. Old English, Old Welsh, and modern translations intertwined, weaving a tapestry of ancient voices that echoed through the centuries.
As twilight descended, a procession led by a warrior guided the guests from the Moot Hall to a truly atmospheric location – the Soulton Long Barrow, a Neo-Neolithic burial mound that rests here. Bathed in the flickering light of torches, the barrow transformed into a stage for the final act. The climactic scenes of Beowulf unfolded against this awe-inspiring backdrop, prompting deep reflection on themes of mortality, grief, and the enduring power of memory.
The experience culminated back in the Moot Hall, where a toast marked the end of this extraordinary journey. Guests departed not just entertained, but deeply moved by a glimpse into a bygone era.
Beowulf at the Barrow was more than just a performance; it was a portal to a forgotten world. It served as a poignant reminder of the stories that lie all too dormant and a celebration of the rich tapestry woven by history, language, and tradition.
