We are advised a motion is to be tabled in the full council meeting on 24 September, the exact form of which will be set out on the Shropshire Cuoncil website here.

The proposed council motion centers on the shared cultural memory connecting Saint Erkenwald and the high altar stone of Old St Paul’s Cathedral to Shropshire and London. I

t notes research indicating that physical items linked to them were brought to Soulton Hall for safekeeping by Sir Rowland Hill, who served as Lord Mayor of London from 1549 to 1550 and worked to protect endangered heritage during sixteenth-century turmoil. The text, we understand, expresses gratitude to researchers James D. Wenn, James Syrett, Aed Thompson, and the Ashton family for preserving and presenting this history over generations. It also notes that these findings offer opportunities to connect different faith communities, honour the centuries-old relationship between Shropshire and the City of London, and acknowledge the historical matters raised at the 813th Quit Rents ceremony.

This new proposal follows a previous unanimous council motion concerning Shakespearean ties that developed engagement with Parliament.

It also expands upon the points regarding Saint Erkenwald discussed in the podcast with The Rest Is History and follows written questions asked within the House of Commons.
