Today, we were delighted to welcome three representatives from the Historic Houses Foundation to Soulton Hall. Our goal was to introduce them to the estate and discuss the evolving needs of this heritage asset—a site of national importance that remains in private care.
For centuries, Soulton Hall has stood without external financial support for its heritage stewardship.
The Ashton family and their forebears have dedicated themselves to the preservation of the house, funded entirely through the estate’s own grit and industry—from traditional farming to heritage and hospitality.
Alongside the physical upkeep of the house, the family has championed a wide array of charitable and cultural objectives, including:
-
Arts & Culture: Supporting theatre and Shakespearean research.
-
Academic Outreach: Facilitating studies in Renaissance mathematics and history.
-
Conservation: Managing wildlife habitats and pioneering sustainable agricultural practices.
As Soulton’s national significance becomes more widely recognized—specifically its deep-coded links to William Shakespeare and As You Like It and its importance in the story of faith —the demand for public access is growing.
While we welcome this interest, much of this educational and cultural outreach is not commercial in nature. It is a service to our national heritage that requires a new model of resource management.
The visit from the Foundation marks an essential exchange of knowledge, assessing how a partnership between private owners and national stakeholders can ensure Soulton Hall flourishes for future generations.
Update: 27 February
We are thrilled to share that, following our meeting, the Foundation has been in touch regarding potential financial support. They are considering a grant to fund a formal Condition Report. This is a vital first step, providing us with a professional, comprehensive assessment to ensure “orderly attention” to the needs of this important building. We are grateful for the Foundation’s recognition of Soulton’s importance and look forward to this burgeoning partnership.
