Today, we attended the Welcoming Coaches and Groups Workshop hosted by Visit Shropshire at Battlefield 1403. It was an exceptionally useful morning of collaboration and practical strategy, focusing on how we can make our region even more accessible and welcoming for group travel. The session featured an insightful opening presentation by Mark from Visit Shropshire, who shared valuable local context rooted in his family background in the area. We also heard a fantastic presentation from Birmingham City Council detailing how urban and regional partnerships successfully manage group travel.
A core focus of the workshop centered on the Confederation of Passenger Transport Coach Friendly Scheme. The statistics and arguments presented highlighted why welcoming coaches is beneficial for both local businesses and the wider environment. For instance, one coach carrying fifty people can prevent at least twenty individual car trips, and carbon emissions from a modern coach are six times lower per passenger than private car travel. Coaches deliver high-spend visitors who directly support local shops, cafes, and attractions, increasing footfall without adding to congestion, while also providing an accessible alternative that opens up leisure opportunities across the income spectrum. The accreditation criteria for towns, attractions, and destinations focus on practical infrastructure, including adequate drop-off and pick-up points, clear directional signage, driver facilities, and robust provision for wheelchair and mobility-impaired passengers.
This workshop was strategically helpful for Soulton Hall as we look at ways to better accommodate day visitors. We recognize a clear and growing need to expand our welcome, particularly in light of our historical connections, including our links to Shakespeare and our heritage, which continue to draw interest from travelers near and far. Improving our infrastructure for group and coach visitors is not just about logistics, because what helps group visitors navigate and enjoy Soulton Hall more easily ends up helping all visitors. We left the workshop with practical ideas and renewed enthusiasm to develop our offering, ensuring that everyone who arrives at our gates receives a warm and seamless welcome.
