The changing seasons always bring fresh opportunities to explore the rich biodiversity at Soulton Hall.
On Saturday, 31st October, we look forward to welcoming back the Shropshire Fungus Group for another specialized foray into the ancient depths of the “As You Like It” Wood. Please note that the “As You Like It” Wood is a private woodland, and public tickets will not be available for this year’s foray. The upcoming survey is a closed, private session for field research.

Fungus: Lepiota cristata
Although public attendance is not possible this season, we look forward to sharing the findings, species data, and summaries compiled by the Shropshire Fungus Group after the event concludes.
The upcoming survey builds upon a remarkably successful foray in the woodland last year. During that visit, experts recorded an unprecedented 159 species across the grounds. Highlights from the findings included specimens of Magpie Inkcaps and The Blusher in pristine condition, alongside Sulphur Tuft fungi that illuminated bright fluorescent green under ultraviolet light.
The day also offered a wonderful blend of natural history and literary heritage. Previous participants enjoyed learning from experts Clive, John, and Karen, who shared identification tips and scientific names while gathering near the historic site that inspired Thomas Lodge—author of Rosalynde, the source material for Shakespeare’s As You Like It.
Such an impressive tally of species identified in a single visit highlights the incredible ecological vitality hidden within Soulton Wood. Private surveys such as the one taking place on 31st October allow expert recorders to log rare specimens, track fungal health, and preserve the delicate balance of our woodland ecosystem without disruption.
