Shrewsbury School will host a thought-provoking public discussion focusing on politics, public service, and the fundamental importance of integrity in public life. The upcoming evening, organized as part of the school’s Dialogues program, will offer local residents and students a rare insight into the mechanisms that govern political accountability and conduct in high office.
The entire evening serves as a major charity event, organized at the invitation of the High Sheriff of Shropshire, Jane Trowbridge. All support and proceeds from the evening go directly toward her designated High Sheriff’s charity initiative, the Youth Awareness Day initiative. This charitable fund focuses on engaging young people across the county with critical contemporary issues, leadership responsibilities, and the positive impact of dedicated public service.
Shropshire’s Lord Lieutenant, Anna Turner, is actively involved in the evening’s proceedings, supporting the charity event alongside the High Sheriff. Headmaster Leo Winkley will lead the live, on-stage conversation, which will conclude with an open question-and-answer session for the audience.
The evening will focus on the extensive career of Sir Laurie Magnus CBE, who serves as the Prime Minister’s Independent Adviser on Ministerial Standards. Sir Laurie was appointed to this vital, non-partisan role in December 2022 and continues to advise on matters of public office conduct. Alongside his financial and public sector career, Sir Laurie has spent three decades in the heritage sector, including leadership roles with the National Trust, English Heritage, and Historic England, where he was closely involved in the restoration of Shrewsbury’s own Flaxmill Maltings.
