Tucked away in a field beside Soulton Hall, our dig site sits among the beautiful rolling Shropshire hills. Just eight miles from today’s border with Wales, the manor itself dates back the 16th century, and the surrounding farmland is filled with Bronze Age, Roman, and medieval archaeology. But it’s the large, rectangular mound next to the manor which is the focus of our excavation.

When exploring complex histories, arriving at conclusions is rarely about finding a single, static piece of proof. Instead, investigation is an active, ongoing process of discernment.
It involves weighing physical fragments against documents, setting material culture side by side with art history, and continuously testing interpretations against new data.
At Soulton, that foundation of work is exceptionally robust. Over six seasons of fieldwork with DigVentures, coupled with extensive non-invasive surveys and deep archival research, the project has accumulated a vast body of material. Much of this work is already published in interim reports, while a significant amount of private study and specialized analysis is actively moving toward future publication.
