This motion asks Parliament to acknowledge the unique literary importance of Soulton Hall.
The AOL article explores the deep ties between this manor and William Shakespeare. Research suggests that the landscape of Soulton served as the inspiration for the forest setting of the comedy As You Like It. The piece highlights the family history linking the Hills of Soulton to Mary Arden, the mother of William Shakespeare. It is believed that Sir Rowland Hill, a cousin of Mary Arden, was the inspiration for the character “Old Sir Rowland” in the play.
The article also notes physical features within the house that relate to these stories. Custodian Tim Ashton is quoted regarding a paved area of the manor that appears to preserve the choreography for the dance of eight people at the conclusion of As You Like It.
Parliamentary recognition also noted that the grounds have hosted many performances over the years, including sessions with the National Youth Theatre.
Upcoming Performance
The Shropshire Youth Theatre will perform As You Like It at the manor on May 8. This production will use a 1994 rave culture theme to present the play in the very landscape that inspired its origins.
