Early this morning, as the twilight began to lift over the Shropshire landscape, a quiet community gathered at the Soulton Long Barrow.
Today, Sunday, 21st June 2026, we marked the highest point of the year—not with noise or spectacle, but with a shared moment of calm anticipation.

A quiet moment of reflection at Soulton Long Barrow as the local community comes together for the tenth annual midsummer dawn.
The morning proved to be one of the most atmospheric dawn gatherings we have ever experienced. A soft, warm mist hung low over the fields, softening the light and creating a truly unique environment as the sun began to rise. For those standing together in the quiet air, watching the golden light break through the haze and stream down the causeway, it felt like a milestone moment.
In fact, looking back across the ten years of the barrow project’s life so far, this morning stands out as one of the very best summer solstice dawns.
Reaching this ten-year mark is a meaningful moment, but the barrow project is built to go on for far longer than a single decade.

It is designed to endure for centuries, acting as a permanent fixture in the landscape. The core values of the Soulton Long Barrow remain exactly the same today as they did at the beginning: it is a place built on common ground, respect, and welcome. Because it is engineered to align precisely with the midsummer sunrise without belonging to any single philosophy, tradition, or belief system, it serves as a space where everyone can stand on equal terms to share a universal human experience, year after year, far into the future.
This misty morning brought together people from across all different faith perspectives, alongside those without faith, showing how naturally these different viewpoints coexist.
For the scientifically minded, there is a profound wonder in the absolute predictability of the cosmic mechanics. The precise mathematical relationship between the Earth and the Sun, paired with the marvel of human consciousness and our shared ability to witness it, is a magnificent thing to contemplate.
Meanwhile, for those who hold a view that there is something meaningful beyond the physical mechanics, being present in the midst of the natural world allows for a quiet contemplation of the divine and the interconnected nature of existence.
The alignment represents a beautiful, connective moment across time and generations. All of this is linking our modern community with those who stood in this landscape thousands of years ago, and those who will stand here long after us.
Whether viewed through the lens of physics, personal philosophy, or simply an appreciation for the stillness of a Shropshire dawn, every perspective was united by a shared sense of appreciation.
The atmosphere this morning was wonderfully relaxed and low-key. In a modern world that rarely slows down, the gathering offered a rare pocket of absolute peace. Before the sun appeared, the early morning birdsong filled the misty valley, providing a natural soundtrack as the dew-covered grass caught the first twilight. At approximately 4:45 AM, the precise alignment achieved its purpose, sending a warm beam of morning light straight through the mist and into the heart of the stone chamber.
We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who woke up early and brought their flasks to share this milestone morning with us.

As we look forward to the deep future of the barrow project, the barrow can firmly be expected to do this beyond out lifetimes, and the spirit of welcome that defined this morning will continue.
Thank you for being a part of this journey.
