We are always mindful of the deep threads of history and community that bind our county together.
We were delighted to see the recent announcement from the Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire regarding a historic event to mark Shropshire Day (the feast of St Milburga). This year, there is a very special “first of its kind” celebration taking place along the River Severn that we wanted to bring to your attention.
A Pilgrimage of Two Dioceses
On Sunday, February 22nd, a unique service will bridge the gap between the Diocese of Hereford and the Diocese of Lichfield.
Led by both the Bishop of Hereford and the Bishop of Lichfield, this event celebrates the unity of our county.
The Plan for the Day:
Start (2:00 PM): A service begins at St Mary the Virgin, Jackfield.
The Journey: A 2.5-mile walk crossing the River Severn, transitioning from the south of the county to the north.
Conclusion (Approx. 4:00 PM): A final service at the Church of St Mary, Sutton Maddock.
Shropshire’s identity is defined by its landscape—its rivers, its hills, and its ancient parishes.
Seeing our two diocesan Bishops and the Lord-Lieutenant join together for a walk across the Severn is a beautiful modern echo of the pilgrimages that have shaped this land for centuries.
Event Highlights:
Open to all: Everyone is welcome to join the walk or just attend the church services.
Four-legged friends: In a lovely touch, dogs are officially welcome in both churches!
A New Collect: A special prayer for Shropshire, drafted by Rev Chris Thorpe, will be shared to mark the occasion.
