The formal commencement of Councillor Alex Wagner’s mayoral year was marked this morning with a Commemoration of Mayoralty service held at St Chad’s Church. The service, a traditional event in the town’s civic calendar, drew a congregation of local dignitaries and community members, which we were glad to join.

Attendees included one of His Majesty’s Deputy Lieutenants for Shropshire, representing the Crown, and the Bishop of Shrewsbury, who participated in the service. Magistrates and other local office holders were also present, underscoring the significance of the occasion within the local civic structure.
The service itself featured prayers for the town and its residents, as well as for Councillor Wagner as he assumes his responsibilities as Mayor.
Readings and hymns formed part of the proceedings, reflecting the historical and spiritual dimensions of the mayoral office.
The event served as a formal recognition of the transition into the new mayoral year, highlighting the continuity of civic leadership within Shrewsbury. The presence of representatives from various local institutions emphasized the collaborative nature of the town’s governance.
