This antique Staffordshire porcelain cabinet plate, dating to 1885 and manufactured by Spode, is part of the collection at Soulton Hall.
Mercer’s Plate
Its design, featuring the insignia of the Worshipful Company of Mercers London Guild Livery, serves as a tangible reminder of the enduring legacy of Old Sir Rowland Hill (died 1561). Sir Rowland Hill served as Warden of the Mercers’ Company between 1535–6, 1543–4, 1550–51, and 1555–6.
His membership within the Mercers’ Company overlapped with that of Francis Wren, the grandfather of the renowned architect Christopher Wren.
