It was with genuine anticipation that we recently attended the private view for Sam Pooley Stride’s latest exhibition, “ALL ROADS LEAD TO MOTHER.” The event was well-attended, with over 100 people coming to engage with a new body of work.
This new show represents an interesting and significant direction for Sam’s practice. Many of you will recall her compelling exhibition, “Seas on the Moon Too,” which was displayed at Soulton Hall in October 2023. That show invited contemplation of vast, celestial themes.
With “ALL ROADS LEAD TO MOTHER,” Sam now turns her insightful focus inward, exploring the intricate and often challenging aspects of motherhood.

The themes presented invite contemplation of sensitive territory. While celebrating the profound connections and transformative experiences of motherhood, the exhibition does not shy away from its complexities, including the difficult and important subject of baby loss. It is a show that prompts reflection and empathy, proving to be deeply thought-provoking. Sam’s approach to such subjects, combining artistic integrity with a sensitive touch, is commendable.

“ALL ROADS LEAD TO MOTHER” is not presented as a primarily commercial exhibition. Its main purpose appears to be to foster contemplation and discussion around a universal, yet intensely personal, human experience. However, for those moved by the works, prints are being offered for sale.

The increasing focus on female issues and experiences within contemporary art is both relevant and important. It contributes to broader understanding, challenges perspectives, and provides a voice for narratives that may have been historically underrepresented. We are pleased to observe an artist we have supported developing her practice with this depth and courage, and to see her work acknowledged by a strong and engaged audience at the private view. This indicates the resonance of her artistic vision.
