We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of C.J. Sansom, the talented author whose historical crime fiction series, featuring the enigmatic lawyer Matthew Shardlake, captivated readers worldwide.

Sansom’s ability to bring the Tudor era to life, with all its intrigue, violence, and moral complexities, was truly remarkable.

The Shardlake series offered a unique perspective on a period often overlooked in popular historical fiction. Sansom’s meticulous research and vivid descriptions transported readers to a time of religious turmoil, political intrigue, and social upheaval. Shardlake himself, a man of deep faith and unwavering integrity, was a compelling protagonist whose struggles and triumphs resonated with readers.

One of the series’ greatest strengths was its exploration of claustrophobia and anger, emotions that mirrored the turbulent times in which Shardlake lived. Sansom’s ability to convey the psychological turmoil of his characters, particularly Shardlake’s growing frustration with the injustices of his society, was both powerful and poignant.

Through Shardlake’s investigations, readers were privy to glimpses of the fascinating world of Tudor England. From the dangerous streets of London to the opulent halls of the Privy Council, Sansom’s characters were immersed in historical events.

For us, the series has brought to life, in the most relatable way, some aspects of the life of our own Old Sir Rowland Hill, who lived through the Geneva Bible conspiracy, survived piracy, protected art treasures, and navigated the dangers of the Privy Council.

While there may be other historical crime fiction series that swirl around the Tudor era, Sansom’s Shardlake books stand out for their depth, complexity, and authenticity. The author’s ability to create a world that felt both familiar and alien was a testament to his skill as a storyteller.
