Located in Derbyshire, England, this iconic building was commissioned by Bess of Hardwick, a wealthy widow seeking to establish her power and influence within English society.
Smythson’s technical and engineering prowess is evident in the mansion’s bold and striking design. The deployment of symmetry, proportion, and light creates a dramatic and visually stunning effect.
However, when compared to Wollaton Hall and Bolsover Castle, and the earlier Soulton, Hardwick Hall’s design reveals a more flamboyant and theatrical approach, reflecting Bess of Hardwick’s desire to impress and intimidate, as against document ideas and discharge statecraft.
Wollaton Hall, exhibits a more refined and cleverer Renaissance style which carries more information, indicative of the Willoghby family’s different architectural aspirations, drawing more explicitly on Old Sir Rowland’s pattern here.
