Today we visited Powis Castle, a Grade I listed building nestled near Welshpool, Wales, boasts a fascinating history. Originally built in the 13th century by a Welsh prince, Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn, it stands out as a rare Welsh-constructed castle on the Marches.
Over time, Powis Castle transformed from a medieval fortress into a grand country house under the ownership of the Herbert family, Earls of Powis. Today, it’s renowned for two key features:
- Often hailed as “the most important” in Wales, these meticulously landscaped gardens are a testament to Victorian horticultural expertise.
- The castle’s opulent state rooms, adorned with exquisite plasterwork and portraits, are considered “the most magnificent” in the country.
Now under the care of the National Trust, Powis Castle offers visitors a glimpse into Wales’s rich heritage, showcasing the evolution of architecture and artistry over the centuries.
