Recently, children connected to Soulton Hall received copies of children’s editions of William Shakespeare’s As You Like It.
This initiative aims to introduce young readers to classic literature.
As You Like It: A Shakespeare Children’s Story (Easy Classics) (20 Shakespeare Children’s Stories (Easy Classics))
As You Like It is a pastoral comedy featuring themes of love, disguise, and reconciliation, set primarily in the Forest of Arden.
The play has a direct connection to Soulton Hall, with Soulton Wood being the inspiration for Thomas Lodge’s Rosalynde, which Shakespeare substantially reworked for As You Like It.
Furthermore, Sir Rowland Hill, who built Soulton Hall, is thought to be the inspiration for Shakespeare’s “Old Sir Rowland” in the play, and the Hall also features a “dancing pavement” thought to relate to the play’s final dance.
These adapted versions are designed to make Shakespeare’s narrative accessible for a younger audience.
The distribution of these books is intended to foster an early engagement with literary works.
