Shropshire Town’s History Spotlighted by BBC Ahead of Event
A huge thank you to Chloe Hughes and BBC News West Midlands for shining a light on the upcoming “Wem 1643: A Seventeenth Century Weekend”! It’s fantastic to see the BBC highlighting the significant role our town of Wem played during the first English Civil War.
The Militias of Anglia come to Wem
For those who might have missed the report, this two-day event on May 17th and 18th at the Butler sports centre promises a fascinating glimpse into 17th Century England. Organised by the Militias of Anglia, with military drills, craft demonstrations, and activities for children.
What’s particularly exciting is the focus on Wem’s brave stance in 1643. As the first town in Shropshire to declare for Parliament under Colonel Mytton, Wem played a crucial role in the conflict. The story of how the locals, including the women of Wem, successfully defended the town against Lord Capel and his Royalist forces is truly inspiring and a testament to the resilience of our community.

beat Lord Capel and all his cavaliers”
perfectly captures their spirit!
The potential safeguarding of important documents, possibly including a copy of Magna Carta evacuated from Soulton, adds another layer of significance to Wem’s wartime actions:

It’s wonderful that the event will bring this history to life with an authentic 17th Century encampment, military displays including pike and musket drills, and even artillery demonstrations. The inclusion of children’s games, a period fashion show, and talks about inspiring women of the war ensures there will be something for everyone to enjoy and learn from.
