The primary source for the existence of this putative tunnel originates from Iris Woodward’s 1952 publication, “The Story of Wem.” Woodward details a proposed route commencing beneath the castle mound, a remnant of a bygone era. The alleged passage then supposedly continues towards a structure formerly known as “The Moathouse,” hinting at a potential connection to Wem’s defensive history. The narrative suggests the tunnel’s trajectory then traverses beneath Mill Street, a central artery of the town, before culminating at Roden House, the former rectory.
There is also an early C20th account of a traction engine falling into a Tunnel near the mill.
