DESCRIPTION:The High Sheriff of Shropshire is scheduled to visit Soulton Hall on 26 May\, for a private visit. \nThis engagement will offer an occasion to appreciate the enduring character of this historic estate and its continuing contribution to the cultural and civic life of Shropshire. \nSoulton Hall holds a notable historical link to the Shrievalty\, as Mr. Thomas Hill\, the esteemed builder of the Hall’s doorcase\, served with distinction as High Sheriff of Shropshire in 1680. \nThe visit reflects the High Sheriff’s ongoing commitment to the communities and heritage of Shropshire. \nThe office of High Sheriff stands as a venerable institution with roots stretching back to Saxon times\, predating even the Norman Conquest. Traditionally\, the High Sheriff is a direct appointee of the Crown\, a practice that continues to this day\, signifying the enduring link between the monarch and the counties of England and Wales. \nOn Thursday\, 10th April 2025\, at St Michael’s Church\, Little Ness\, Shropshire\, Jane Trowbridge JP was declared the new High Sheriff of Shropshire. \nMs. Trowbridge’s principal focus during her Shrieval year will be empowering young people in the county whose lives have been affected by challenging circumstances such as fragmented families\, long-term unemployment\, addiction\, exploitation\, domestic violence\, and other forms of abuse. \nHighlighting the presence of vulnerable youth despite Shropshire’s strong community spirit\, Ms. Trowbridge\, drawing on her experience as a magistrate\, aims to support the dedicated individuals within local charities and organizations who tirelessly assist these young people facing mental health issues and the risk of criminalization. Inspired by Thomas Lodge’s Rosalynde (1590)\, which found its roots in Soulton Wood\, on the Lodge family estate\, and then the estate of ‘Old’ Sir Rowland Hill. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a journey through the captivating landscapes of Soulton Hall\, where history\, legend\, and natural beauty converge. \nSoulton Hall has been the setting of a number of digs with Dig Ventures \nThis in-depth tour explores the rich tapestry of this remarkable site\, beginning with the revelations of a six-year archaeological excavation that has brought the lost castle to light. \nClick here for the ticket link\nWe will trace the remnants of the lost avenue\, envisioning the processions of a bygone era\, and pause at the serene Well of Catharsis (Holy Well)\, a place steeped in ancient traditions and consider the ‘Sermons in Stone’ of Soulton Hall. \nA sign with an AS YOU LIKE IT quotation in the Soulton landscape: Now\, my co-mates and brothers in exile\,Hath not old custom made this life more sweetThan that of painted pomp? Are not these woodsMore free from peril than the envious court? \nWe will then enter the normally private and enchanting As You Like It Wood\, especially vibrant during the bluebell season\, we will explore the connections between this landscape and the world of William Shakespeare: “Old Sir Rowland” in “As You Like It” is inspired by Soulton’s Rowland Hill\, who was a cousin of Mary Arden. \nRosalind’s Cottage in Soulton Wood\, the AS YOU LIKE IT WOOD \nMoreover the source text\, “Rosalynde” (1590) was written by Thomas Lodge Jr whose father held this manner before Sir Rowland Hill and his boyhood is linked to this setting in the Forest of Arden which extends well into Shropshire . We will discuss the historical context of the area\, and how it influenced Shakespeare’s famous play. \nOur path then leads us to the Soulton Long Barrow\, a newly constructed feature built in honour of ancient traditions. This feature allows us to experience some of the feelings our ancestors may have felt. \nAndrew Fusek Peters captured the colourful spectacle at the Soulton Long Barrow in Shropshire. \nWe will see the famous dancing pavement at Soulton Hall before finishing for refreshments. \nImportant Information \nThis tour requires a reasonable level of fitness\, as participants will be walking approximately 3.5km over a period of about two hours\, with limited opportunities for seating. Built by Sir Rowland Hill\, a man woven into the very fabric of the Elizabethan era\, the house is constructed in coded message waiting to be deciphered. \nWithin its walls lies a story of defiance to oppression\, of artistic inspiration\, and of the dawn of a new age. Sir Rowland Hill\, a pivotal figure in Reformation and on the Privy Councils of Henry VIII\, Edward VI\, Mary I and Elizabeth I\, used Soulton Hall as a clandestine base for his most daring act – the publication of the Geneva Bible. This revolutionary translation\, deemed heretical by some\, is one of the most important texts ever printed. \nSoulton Hall was also a refuge. During times of persecution\, the house provided sanctuary to those in danger\, offering them a safe haven from the storm. Scholarly materials\, were also kept secure home within Soulton’s walls\, ensuring their survival for future generations. \nSir Rowland’s influence extended beyond the realm of religion. His network of contacts and his passion for the arts played a pivotal role in igniting the creative spark of William Shakespeare\, is cousin via Mary Arden. The idyllic setting and clandestine activities within Soulton Hall are thought to have inspired the beloved comedy As You Like It. This is underlined by the fact that Soulton was the family home of the Lodge family prior to 1556 and hence is tied to the write of the source book\, by Thomas Lodge\, Rosalynde (1590) as well as ‘Old’ Sir Rowland. \nSoulton is a tangible connection to the Tudor Period and Elizabethan Golden Age\, a period of unparalleled danger\, creativity and intellectual awakening. \nThe house stands as a testament to Sir Rowland Hill\, a kind and brave man who dared to challenge the status quo and ushered in a new era. \nSoulton Hall is more than just a house; it’s a coded message waiting to be unravelled\, a testament to a bygone era\, and a reminder of the power of human ingenuity and the enduring spirit of resistance. \nThe tour includes the concealed chapel\, priests hide\, a sense of some of the Renaissance codes\, the chess court and Wren Steps. The As You Like It dancing pavement and the Rowland Hill Furniture. \nTickets £25 including tea and cake \nAccess: The Soulton Hall building\, which is the focus of the tour\, unfortunately presents access challenges. The main floor is accessed off the Wren steps (seven shallow steps in the chess court\, which is gravelled). Once inside Soulton Hall there are three tour rooms on the principal floor\, and access to the WCs is up a further three steps. There are important rooms in the basement\, accessed down 13 stairs. There are further rooms\, including the first gallery which are accessed off a flight of 19 stairs. There is step free access to outdoor spaces\, an accessible WC and meeting/entertaining room on the ground floor of Soulton Court.
