DESCRIPTION:The Soulton Long Barrow is a unique space—a contemporary architectural monument that serves as a  atmospheric gathering place\, perfectly aligned to capture the celestial movements that have marked time for millennia. \nThe event organizer has shared the following detailed description of the ceremony\, which blends ancient storytelling\, music\, and communal warmth to mark this turning point: \nSaturday 20th December\, 2.30pm for a 3pm start \nAs the year draws to its quiet close and the sun makes its slow descent\, we gather once more at Soulton Long Barrow to honour the turning of the light. \nThe barrow will open at 2.30pm\, with the event beginning at 3pm\, held in the stillness and beauty of midwinter’s glow. We are joined by two remarkable artists whose gifts weave story\, song\, and spirit together into something truly unforgettable. \nDanielle Free\, storyteller and scholar of Celtic Studies\, brings tales that shimmer with ancient wisdom. Her storytelling is immersive and alive\, each listener drawn into the heart of the tale as if around a fire long ago. \nElin Gittins\, a luminous folk singer\, will share songs in both Welsh and English – songs that hold the ache and beauty of winter\, of remembering\, of returning to light. \nTogether\, they will guide us through story and song as the sun begins to set\, spilling its final light through the magnificent stained glass at the back of the barrow – a sight that\, if the skies are kind\, feels nothing short of enchantment. \nAs the light fades\, song will gently lead us across the land to Soulton Hall\, where warmth awaits. There\, we’ll gather by the glow of winter lamps\, sharing mince pies and warm drinks\, and the quiet companionship of kindred souls marking the solstice together. \nCome and be part of this soulful celebration – an afternoon of beauty\, reflection\, and community as we stand on the threshold of light’s return. \nPlease park at Soulton Hall and enjoy a ten-minute gentle walk over to the barrow following the standing stones. DESCRIPTION:Soulton Hall is opening publicly the Prayer Room and Aedicule spaces not only for access but also with a more complete contextualisation than has been appropriate hitherto. \nThis unique location within Soulton Hall will now be included in select Historic Houses Association Tours and Heritage Presentations and is presented specifically as a historic\, cultural\, and ecumenical artifact. \nThe Prayer Room\, located within Soulton Hall\, offers ticket holders a significant opportunity to inspect an area of profound spiritual and historical importance. \nHenceforth\, access to these parts of the house is provided to anyone with a valid ticket\, on a basis of heritage presentation and cultural experience. \nThis facilitates access that is not contingent upon any specific faith or religious stakeholder commitment\, but the family wishes to be clear that parts of Soulton Hall that have this valency being made available in this way for the first time in 475 years is only possible after an extended and respectful period of ecumenical engagement with faith communities whose stories bifurcated in nature around the legacy of these rooms. \nWe wish to be clear that the physical areas of Soulton Hall that have impact on people of faith are respected. \nThey are not to be treated in a sensationalist or gimmicky way.  No phorography is permitted. \nThe Ashton family wishes to acknowledge that making this space available for general public inspection is a major step. \nThis decision was only finalized once they were satisfied that all appropriate respect and consideration had been given to the religious stakeholders involved in the Hall’s complex and unique ecumenical history.  \nThis approach ensures that Soulton Hall’s commitment to heritage preservation is balanced with its responsibility to spiritual integrity.

Built by Sir Rowland Hill\, a man woven into the fabric of the Tudor era\, the house is constructed in Renaissance codes\, waiting to be deciphered. \nWithin its walls lies a story of defiance to oppression\, of artistic inspiration\, and of the dawn of a new age. \nSir Rowland Hill\, a pivotal figure in Reformation and on the Privy Councils of Henry VIII\, Edward VI\, Mary I and Elizabeth I\, used Soulton Hall as a clandestine base for his most daring act – the work one the Elizabethan Golden Age and the publication of the Geneva Bible. This revolutionary translation\, deemed heretical in its moment and later ratified\, is one of the most important texts ever printed. \nSoulton Hall was also a refuge. During times of persecution\, the house provided sanctuary to those in danger\, offering them a safe haven from the storm. \nScholarly materials\, were also kept secure home within Soulton’s walls\, ensuring their survival for future generations. \nSir Rowland’s influence extended beyond the realm of religion. \nHis network of contacts and his passion for the arts played a pivotal role in igniting the creative spark of William Shakespeare\, is cousin via Mary Arden. The idyllic setting and clandestine activities within Soulton Hall inspired the beloved Shakespeare comedy As You Like It. This is a unique opportunity to experience the extraordinary atmosphere of the Long Barrow in a new way. No previous experience is needed—simply bring a mat\, chair\, or cushion to make yourself comfortable\, and a blanket to stay warm.
