Join us for a magical evening of theater. \nFrom the players\, Whole Pack Theatre: \n“Fury and discord have plunged the world into a wild\, wintry wonderland\, where nothing is as it seems. While warring fairies wreak havoc on the climate\, four lovers try to find harmony amongst the confusion. Meanwhile\, the local amdram group is just trying to rehearse their panto. \nA clash of passion\, chaos and anarchic revelry bring festive joy to the darkest of days. \nThe Whole Pack is a newly founded Shakespearean theatre company\, whose primary goal is to afford women the opportunities to bring something dazzling and daring to traditional Shakespearean roles. \nWe are a team of passionate\, skilled and creative women\, determined to create more opportunities for women in our industry. Between us we have years of training and professional experience in theatre and Shakespeare. While working together on a production\, the idea was sparked to create our own all-female Shakespeare company. Built by Sir Rowland Hill\, a man woven into the fabric of the Tudor era\, the house is constructed in Renaissance codes\, waiting to be deciphered. \nWithin its walls lies a story of defiance to oppression\, of artistic inspiration\, and of the dawn of a new age. \nSir Rowland Hill\, a pivotal figure in Reformation and on the Privy Councils of Henry VIII\, Edward VI\, Mary I and Elizabeth I\, used Soulton Hall as a clandestine base for his most daring act – the work one the Elizabethan Golden Age and the publication of the Geneva Bible. This revolutionary translation\, deemed heretical in its moment and later ratified\, is one of the most important texts ever printed. \nSoulton Hall was also a refuge. During times of persecution\, the house provided sanctuary to those in danger\, offering them a safe haven from the storm. \nScholarly materials\, were also kept secure home within Soulton’s walls\, ensuring their survival for future generations. \nSir Rowland’s influence extended beyond the realm of religion. \nHis network of contacts and his passion for the arts played a pivotal role in igniting the creative spark of William Shakespeare\, is cousin via Mary Arden. The idyllic setting and clandestine activities within Soulton Hall inspired the beloved Shakespeare comedy As You Like It. This is underlined by the fact that Soulton was the family home of the Lodge family prior to 1556 and hence is tied to the writer of the source book\, Thomas Lodge via Rosalynde (1590) as well as ‘Old’ Sir Rowland. \nThe Sir Rowland Hill Staircase\, from the single phase of construction pre1560 \nSoulton is a thrilling connection to the Tudor Period and Elizabethan Golden Age\, a period of unparalleled danger\, creativity and intellectual awakening. \nThe house stands as a testament to Sir Rowland Hill\, a kind and brave man who dared to challenge the status quo and ushered in a new era. \nThe tour includes the concealed chapel\, priests hide\, a sense of some of the Renaissance codes\, the chess court and Wren Steps as well as the As You Like It dancing pavement and the Rowland Hill Furniture.

These tours will also look onto the dancing pavement and across to the woodland setting of the play. \nThe tours will be offered on a first-come\, first-served basis and will be limited to 30 people. \nWorkshops led by Jacob\n(suitable for anyone over the age of 5)\nEarly years and community access to visual arts are important principles around arts commissioning at Soulton Hall. We at Soulton Hall have therefore requested Jacob to develop accessible community events with a focus on families\, which he has kindly agreed to support as part of his practice. \nSoulton Wood\, inspiration for Thomas Lodge’s Rosalynde and for Shakespeare’s AS YOU LIKE IT \nThere will be several workshops throughout the weekend\, in Soulton Court. Jacob will lead activities suitable for families\, where they can produce greeting cards to take home. DESCRIPTION:The Ceremony of Quit Rents is a unique and historic event that takes place annually in London. It’s one of the oldest legal ceremonies in England\, dating back to 1211. \nWhat is a Quit Rent?\nA quit rent is a nominal rent paid to a landlord in lieu of other services or obligations. In this case\, the City of London pays a symbolic rent to the Crown for two pieces of land in Shropshire. \nThe Ceremony\nThe ceremony is presided over by the Queen’s Remembrancer. \nThe City Sheriffs\, dressed in traditional robes\, present the Crown with a symbolic payment of two knives\, 61 nails\, and 6 giant horseshoes. These items represent the original rent that was once paid in kind. \nDespite the passage of centuries\, the ceremony continues as a symbol of the City of London’s historical relationship with the Crown. It’s a fascinating glimpse into England’s past and a testament to the enduring nature of ancient traditions. \nThe Ashton family will be participating as heirs of Sir Rowland Hill at Soulton.

The main floor is accessed off the Wren steps (seven shallow steps in the chess court\, which is gravelled). Once inside Soulton Hall there are three tour rooms on the principal floor\, and access to the WCs is up a further three steps. There are important rooms in the basement\, accessed down 13 stairs. There are further rooms\, including the first gallery which are accessed off a flight of 19 stairs. There is step free access to outdoor spaces\, an accessible WC and meeting/entertaining room on the ground floor of Soulton Court. That building contains the historic court room\, known as the ‘Moot Hall’\, it is accessed again up 16 stairs. \nPlease see our cancellation policy below:\nIf you cancel more than two weeks before the tour is scheduled to take place\, we will fully refund your ticket money excluding any phone booking fees.
