SUMMARY:Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream at Soulton Hall
DESCRIPTION:A truly unique theatrical experience awaits this summer! \nBritish Touring Shakespeare and Soulton Hall proudly present Shakespeare’s enchanting comedy\, A Midsummer Night’s Dream\, performed within the Hall’s historic and rarely seen Epidaurus Court. \n\nClick here for ticket link\n\nFor the first time in centuries\, this remarkable 16th-century space\, dormant of performance since at least 1783\, will be brought to life\, offering a rare glimpse into how Renaissance and Shakespeare’s plays might have been experienced centuries ago. \nThis is a truly authentic  setting\, offering a unique opportunity to witness theatre as it was intended. \nTwo Gentlemen of Verona Performed by the same company at Soulton Hall \nA Midsummer Night’s Dream is a particularly fitting choice for Soulton Hall\, given its rich history and fascinating literary connections. \nOld Sir Rowland Hill\, the visionary behind Soulton Hall’s extraordinary Renaissance design\, was captivated by the classical allure of Eleusis\, near Athens\, a fascination he encoded into the layout of the Hall. Remarkably\, both the Ancient Telesterion of Greece and Soulton’s Renaissance complex share the same dimensions: 55 yards square. \nBritish Touring Shakespeare present – Mis Summer Nights Dream at Soulton Hall \nThis same classical influence resonates throughout Shakespeare’s play\, notably in Lysander’s description of a location near Athens associated with ancient mysteries (Act 1\, Scene 1). The play’s themes of love\, magic\, and the natural world find a perfect echo within Soulton Hall’s Tudor grounds. \nThe performance will culminate in the play’s iconic dance of eight characters in Theseus’s Hall\, a delightful nod to the famous dance for eight in As You Like It. \nThis connection is especially significant considering Soulton Hall’s close ties to As You Like It through Thomas Lodge Jr.\, whose Rosalynde provided Shakespeare’s source material. Adding to this rich tapestry of connections is Old Sir Rowland Hill’s cousinhood with Shakespeare’s mother and the presence of Soulton’s historic dancing pavement. Sir Rowland Hill is also believed to be the inspiration for Old Sir Rowland in As You Like It. \nThe performance will naturally feature the four intertwined couples of A Midsummer Night’s Dream—Theseus and Hippolyta\, Lysander and Hermia\, Demetrius and Helena\, and Oberon and Titania—celebrating their unions in a harmonious dance\, mirroring the themes of reconciliation and restored order found in As You Like It. \n‘Merry Wives of Windsor’ – performed by the same company at Soulton Hall \nJoin us for an immersive theatrical event that promises to be a highlight of the summer season. Experience Shakespeare in a way that resonates with Soulton Hall’s own captivating past\, a truly unforgettable blend of history\, literature\, and performance. \n  \nCast\nPaul Winterford – Theseus/Oberon \nKate Andrews – Hippolyta/Titania \nSP Howarth – Puck \nAndrew Hobbs – Egeus/Bottom \nTom Thornhill – Lysander/Snout/Cobweb \nCarys Clempner  – Hermia/Starveling/Moth \nMaximilian L’Olive – Demetrius/Flute/Mustardseed \nAlice Gold – Helena/Snug/Peaseblosom \nAlistair Smith – Quince/Philostrate/Apollo

SUMMARY:Jacob Chandler: public invitations to view his AS YOU LIKE IT art
DESCRIPTION:Jacob Chandler’s As You Like It-inspired dancers and retrospective will be shown to the public at Soulton Court from 11 AM to 4 PM. \nThe event is free and unticketed. Children must be supervised. \nJacob Chandler with his ‘As YOu Like It’ Dancers artwork which features in the 2024 Shrewsbury Arts Trail \nBrief tours will take place to allow exceptional public access to the Epidaurus Court (the venue for Old Sir Rowland’s theatrical performances the generation before Shakespeare was born). These tours will also look onto the dancing pavement and across to the woodland setting of the play. \nThe tours will be offered on a first-come\, first-served basis and will be limited to 30 people. \nWorkshops led by Jacob\n(suitable for anyone over the age of 5)\nEarly years and community access to visual arts are important principles around arts commissioning at Soulton Hall. We at Soulton Hall have therefore requested Jacob to develop accessible community events with a focus on families\, which he has kindly agreed to support as part of his practice. \nSoulton Wood\, inspiration for Thomas Lodge’s Rosalynde and for Shakespeare’s AS YOU LIKE IT \nThere will be several workshops throughout the weekend\, in Soulton Court. Jacob will lead activities suitable for families\, where they can produce greeting cards to take home. These greeting cards will also be inspired by Shakespeare’s play about a quest for harmony in an enchanted forest with a good duke working to take back his court from a bad duke. \nThe workshops will last approximately 20-30 minutes and take place at 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM each day. \nThis will work on a pay what you can basis (recommended £5 contribution to cover materials). Please email cal@jacobchandler.co.uk to reserve a space. \nWilliam Shakespeare’s First Folio
