A Seventeenth Century Weekend.” \nThe Militias of Anglia are bring Civil War enactment to Wem \nThis immersive event\, taking place in nearby Wem on Saturday\, May 17th\, and Sunday\, May 18th\, 2025\, at the Butler Sports Centre\, Bowens Field\, Wem (SY4 5AP)\, promises a captivating journey into the dramatic era of the English Civil War for the entire family. \nWhile grand battles often dominate narratives of the English Civil War (or the War of the Three Kingdoms)\, the story of Wem in 1643 stands as a powerful testament to local courage and strategic importance. \nA Militias Of Anglia encampment \nIn September 1643\, Wem made a significant declaration for Parliament\, becoming the first town in Shropshire to align with their cause. This bold act quickly drew the attention of Royalist forces\, who dispatched a substantial army of around 5\,000 soldiers under Lord Capel. Yet\, against overwhelming odds\, the mere 40 Parliamentarian defenders of Wem\, famously aided by the bravery of the town’s women\, repelled the attack. The enduring local saying\, “The women of Wem and a few musketeers defeated Lord Capel and all his cavaliers\,” vividly illustrates their pivotal role. \nFor Soulton Hall\, this historical episode holds a particularly intriguing connection. A little under 90 years before these C17th events\, Old Sir Rowland Hill\, a key figure deeply involved in the establishment of the Geneva Bible\, resided within these walls and built the current hall. \nC17th living history comes to Wem \nHis politically volatile library is understood to have housed a copy of Magna Carta. Furthermore\, the Geneva Bible\, the favoured scripture of the Parliamentarians and a common companion to Cromwell’s troops\, is for ever linked to this place and its reformist annotations shaping the intellectual and religious landscape of the time made this house at least as important as guns and food in this episimoloical conflict. \nConsidering Sir Rowland Hill’s influence and the certainty that both sides would have certainly have anticipated that the presence of such nationally significant documents at Soulton Hall\, the Royalist campaign against Wem takes on a compelling new dimension. \nThe relatively short duration of the campaign\, coupled with the presence of a substantial baggage train of 120 wagons and the Royalists’ failure to secure Wem\, strongly suggests that their primary objective may have been the safeguarding – or perhaps even the acquisition – of these vital state papers\, including Magna Carta and the influential theological texts\, held at Soulton Hall. The spirited defence of Wem\, in this context\, could be viewed as a crucial act in ensuring their control. \nThe “Wem 1643. DESCRIPTION:We recently came across a printed reference to a public showing of the collaborative work “IN HOC SIGNO” by Jacob Chandler\, James Syrette\, and James Wenn at Soulton Hall on April 17th. \nWe wanted to take a moment to gently clarify this information. It appears there might have been a simple misunderstanding\, and we want to ensure everyone has the correct details for experiencing this artwork. \nWhile Soulton Hall is a wonderful venue that often hosts exciting cultural events\, the public showing of “IN HOC SIGNO” is actually planned for a different location and time. \nWe’re delighted to share that “IN HOC SIGNO” will be showcased at the esteemed Minories Gallery in Colchester. Art enthusiasts will have the opportunity to see this collaborative piece during the gallery’s opening hours on the following dates in August: \n\nAugust 21st – 24th (Thursday – Sunday)\nAugust 28th – 31st (Thursday – Sunday)\n\nPlease make a note of these dates and the correct location if you are hoping to view “IN HOC SIGNO”. The Minories Gallery provides a fantastic space to appreciate contemporary art\, and we’re sure this collaboration will be well-received there. \nWe also want to mention that there is an event taking place at Soulton Hall on April 27th. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a journey through the captivating landscapes of Soulton Hall\, where history\, legend\, and natural beauty converge. \nSoulton Hall has been the setting of a number of digs with Dig Ventures \nThis in-depth tour explores the rich tapestry of this remarkable site\, beginning with the revelations of a six-year archaeological excavation that has brought the lost castle to light. \nClick here for the ticket link\nWe will trace the remnants of the lost avenue\, envisioning the processions of a bygone era\, and pause at the serene Well of Catharsis (Holy Well)\, a place steeped in ancient traditions and consider the ‘Sermons in Stone’ of Soulton Hall. \nA sign with an AS YOU LIKE IT quotation in the Soulton landscape: Now\, my co-mates and brothers in exile\,Hath not old custom made this life more sweetThan that of painted pomp? Are not these woodsMore free from peril than the envious court? \nWe will then enter the normally private and enchanting As You Like It Wood\, especially vibrant during the bluebell season\, we will explore the connections between this landscape and the world of William Shakespeare: “Old Sir Rowland” in “As You Like It” is inspired by Soulton’s Rowland Hill\, who was a cousin of Mary Arden. \nRosalind’s Cottage in Soulton Wood\, the AS YOU LIKE IT WOOD \nMoreover the source text\, “Rosalynde” (1590) was written by Thomas Lodge Jr whose father held this manner before Sir Rowland Hill and his boyhood is linked to this setting in the Forest of Arden which extends well into Shropshire . We will discuss the historical context of the area\, and how it influenced Shakespeare’s famous play. \nOur path then leads us to the Soulton Long Barrow\, a newly constructed feature built in honour of ancient traditions. This feature allows us to experience some of the feelings our ancestors may have felt. \nAndrew Fusek Peters captured the colourful spectacle at the Soulton Long Barrow in Shropshire. \nWe will see the famous dancing pavement at Soulton Hall before finishing for refreshments. \nImportant Information \nThis tour requires a reasonable level of fitness\, as participants will be walking approximately 3.5km over a period of about two hours\, with limited opportunities for seating. Join us for a magical evening of theater. \nFrom the players\, Whole Pack Theatre: \n“Fury and discord have plunged the world into a wild\, wintry wonderland\, where nothing is as it seems. While warring fairies wreak havoc on the climate\, four lovers try to find harmony amongst the confusion. Meanwhile\, the local amdram group is just trying to rehearse their panto. \nA clash of passion\, chaos and anarchic revelry bring festive joy to the darkest of days. \nThe Whole Pack is a newly founded Shakespearean theatre company\, whose primary goal is to afford women the opportunities to bring something dazzling and daring to traditional Shakespearean roles. \nWe are a team of passionate\, skilled and creative women\, determined to create more opportunities for women in our industry. Between us we have years of training and professional experience in theatre and Shakespeare. While working together on a production\, the idea was sparked to create our own all-female Shakespeare company. SUMMARY:Jacob Chandler: public invitations to view his AS YOU LIKE IT art
DESCRIPTION:Jacob Chandler’s As You Like It-inspired dancers and retrospective will be shown to the public at Soulton Court from 11 AM to 4 PM. \nThe event is free and unticketed. Children must be supervised. \nJacob Chandler with his ‘As YOu Like It’ Dancers artwork which features in the 2024 Shrewsbury Arts Trail \nBrief tours will take place to allow exceptional public access to the Epidaurus Court (the venue for Old Sir Rowland’s theatrical performances the generation before Shakespeare was born). These tours will also look onto the dancing pavement and across to the woodland setting of the play. \nThe tours will be offered on a first-come\, first-served basis and will be limited to 30 people. \nWorkshops led by Jacob\n(suitable for anyone over the age of 5)\nEarly years and community access to visual arts are important principles around arts commissioning at Soulton Hall. We at Soulton Hall have therefore requested Jacob to develop accessible community events with a focus on families\, which he has kindly agreed to support as part of his practice. \nSoulton Wood\, inspiration for Thomas Lodge’s Rosalynde and for Shakespeare’s AS YOU LIKE IT \nThere will be several workshops throughout the weekend\, in Soulton Court. Jacob will lead activities suitable for families\, where they can produce greeting cards to take home. These greeting cards will also be inspired by Shakespeare’s play about a quest for harmony in an enchanted forest with a good duke working to take back his court from a bad duke. \nThe workshops will last approximately 20-30 minutes and take place at 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM each day. \nThis will work on a pay what you can basis (recommended £5 contribution to cover materials).
